Understanding the Role of the Immune System in Improving Tissue Regeneration: A Workshop
The Forum on Regenerative Medicine will host a two-day workshop to explore potential promising approaches to modulate the immune system and/or the regenerative medicine product for improving the clinical outcomes of tissue repair and regeneration in patients. Discussions at the workshop may explore the current state of knowledge about immune tolerance mechanisms and lessons learned from other areas of research; advances in engineering of allogeneic donor cells for acceptance by the host’s immune system; effects of aging and other factors on the local environment, endogenous repair, and wound healing; modulating the host immune system to create a pro-regenerative environment; and developing tools and preclinical models for monitoring and optimizing the host’s pro-regenerative environment.

With more than 15 years of experience in the field, Dr. Cote was previously the Director of FDA’s Office of Orphan Products Development. This year’s event focused on the topic of Successful Clinical Translation of Innovations to Product Adoption in the Oral Regenerative Market. Following welcome remarks by the director of NIDCR and Resource Center updates, keynote presentations by Drs. William Giannobile (Dean & Professor, Harvard University, School of Dental Medicine) and Michael McGuire (Founder & Chairman, The McGuire Institute), highlighted the power of collaboration between academic and practice-based research networks for success in clinical trials. Subsequent discussion by a panel of experts on commercialization – leaders in major dental companies and experienced entrepreneurs in this space – touched on other critical success factors for the translation of oral regenerative technologies to the marketplace, including regulatory considerations, financing, licensing and acquisitions, product launch, and building a successful company.
